Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho believes that the Premier League’s governing body and the Television authorities in England are not doing enough to give English teams a fair chance in Europe. Mourinho feels that the fixture list for English teams is too cramped for them to mount a significant title challenge domestically and in Europe.
Hinting that Barcelona had an unfair advantage of an extra day of preparation against Manchester City in their recent Champions League round of 16 tie, Mourinho said, “There is something in this country that goes outside my understanding because I don’t understand. It’s not my problem. But why did Manchester City they play Wigan on Sunday before they played Barcelona? Barca played Saturday. Why didn’t they play Wigan on Saturday and have an extra day. People don’t care that English teams are struggling in Europe? Why? I care. Telvision deserves to be powerful because, without them, nothing would be the same. But there is space that could be filled with communication and with people who can think about that and witness the experiences.”
Chelsea are the English team with the best chance of making the last 8 of the Champions League but Mourinho insists that he is not presenting his case just for the Blues, but for all the other English teams in Europe.
The Portuguese also added that the English authorities can adjust the Television schedules without affecting the audience for the game and also expects the stadium tickets to be sold out irrespective of the rescheduling of games.
Chelsea face Turkish giants Galatasaray in the 2nd leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie at Stamford Bridge next week, and have a very good chance of progressing to the last 8 of the competition after drawing 1-1 in Turkey last month.
